Special colors from the pantone color scale are also called spot colors. These are usually used in addition to the primary colors (CMYK). By the use of spot colors, it is also possible to print colors which are outside of the the color gamut of 4-color printing. The spot color as printing color that has special optical properties, is printed in a separate printing step. When printing with spot colors a variety of colors are available you can not achieve with the conventional four shades. The best example is shades with metallic effects. However, spot colors also have practical advantages. The desired color always looks, and worldwide looks, the same – regardless of color profiles, printers or subjective feelings. Thus, these colors are not subject to variations.
